The death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has exceeded 4,000; search efforts are ongoing
In Venezuela, the death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck on June 24 has risen. According to the latest official figures, 4,118 people have died as a result of the disaster, and another 16,740 have been injured.
Compared to the previous report, the death toll has increased by 229.
At the same time, the number of injured has remained unchanged for the fifth consecutive day, and rescue workers have managed to save 6,462 people.
Two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck near the city of Yumare just 39 seconds apart. The coastal state of La Guaira suffered the most damage, where dozens of high-rise buildings collapsed.
According to official data, 856 buildings were damaged, 190 of which were completely destroyed. This tragedy has become the deadliest earthquake in Venezuela in the last century. The previous record was held by the 1967 Caracas earthquake, which claimed the lives of 245 people.
The aftermath of the disaster remains critical for tens of thousands of the country’s residents. According to official information:
- 17,907 people were left homeless;
- 86,794 families have already received humanitarian aid;
- 17,266 people are staying in 89 temporary shelters;
- rescue workers and volunteers have delivered more than 9,766 metric tons of food and 13.9 million liters of drinking water.
Venezuelan authorities have not released an official number of people missing. At the same time, according to UN estimates, the number could reach 50,000, although some of these reports may be duplicates or refer to people with whom contact has been lost due to mobile network outages.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing. According to Jorge Rodríguez, rescue workers continue to clear debris and identify the victims in the country’s hardest-hit areas.
