Kim Jong-un has ordered a sharp increase in North Korea's nuclear capabilities
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a new nuclear materials production facility and set the goal of accelerating the expansion of the country’s nuclear capabilities at an “exponential rate.”
In the released photos, Kim Jong-un is seen inspecting a facility that experts identify as a uranium enrichment plant.
Analysts estimate that the facility may be part of or a new division of the Yongbyon nuclear complex, which is a key hub of North Korea’s nuclear program.
During the visit, the DPRK leader stated that over the past five years, the country has managed to more than double its production capacity for manufacturing nuclear materials for military use.
He emphasized the need to further expand production to implement the state’s long-term defense plans.
“Expanding our nuclear capabilities is vital for building a powerful deterrent arsenal,” Kim Jong Un said.
The North Korean leader traditionally explained the development of the nuclear program as a necessity to counter what the DPRK calls “hostile U.S. policies” and external threats to the country’s security.
In Pyongyang, nuclear weapons are considered a key element in ensuring national security and preserving the current political regime.
Kim Jong-un’s statements came amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific region.
In recent months, the DPRK has significantly stepped up:
- testing various types of ballistic missiles;
- the development of its nuclear program;
- military-technical cooperation with Russia.
These actions are causing concern among the United States, South Korea, Japan, and other Western partners, who view the further expansion of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal as a serious threat to international security.
Experts note that Pyongyang’s latest statements may indicate the regime’s intention to continue a large-scale buildup of nuclear weapons despite international sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
This was reported by North Korean state media, which published photos from the North Korean leader’s visit to a strategic facility, according to Bloomberg.
North Korea has already conducted tests of cruise missiles using artificial intelligence technologies designed for modern combat operations. The tests reportedly confirmed the missiles’ readiness for deployment in artillery units near the border with South Korea.
The DPRKhas received billions in revenue for supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine.
