North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the test of a high-thrust solid-fuel engine for military use and called it an important step toward strengthening the country’s military capabilities.
According to the AP, the engine in question is a modernized carbon-fiber design. Its maximum thrust is 2,500 kilotons—higher than in previous tests.
Experts believe that North Korea is attempting to develop missiles with multiple warheads to increase the chances of penetrating U.S. missile defense systems.
The tests are part of a five-year weapons development program that includes the modernization of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Kim stated that this work is “of key importance” for taking the country’s strategic capabilities to a new level.
Against this backdrop, Pyongyang continues its course toward cementing its status as a nuclear power and regularly tests missiles capable of reaching the United States.
As a reminder, South Korea has completed the deployment of satellites to monitor North Korea.
Russia may also have assisted North Korea with a nuclear submarine.
