Cyprus is preparing for a summer water shortage and implementing new measures
Cyprus is preparing a series of measures to ensure a stable water supply during the summer and prevent forced water cuts during the dry season.
This was reported by the Cyprus Mail.
Iliana Tofas, Director of the Water Resources Department (WDD), told the CNA news agency on Monday that the main goal of the department and local authorities is to reduce water consumption by 10%.
One of the key initiatives will be the free distribution of special water-saving attachments for faucets and showerheads: each household will receive a package containing four faucet attachments and two shower attachments.
According to the official, these devices can reduce water usage by 30–50%, which not only supports the state’s strategic goals but also significantly saves citizens money.
In addition to working with the public, the department is collaborating with regional local government organizations to minimize network losses.
A key milestone was the full-scale launch of the desalination plant in Limassol, which joined the existing facilities in Kissonergi and Moni.
The department’s plan spans three years and includes infrastructure development and helping the population adapt to climate change.
Tofa emphasized that changing consumer behavior is crucial, and water shutoffs are considered only as a last resort, which can be avoided if the projects are implemented and citizens adhere to the conservation plan.
Cyprus and Britain will discussmilitary bases on the island.
Also, Fico is threatening Ukraine with measures over the suspension of oil transit from Russia.
The war is weighing on markets, and stocks on Wall Street are falling.
