China leads the number of universities in the global top 20

In recent years, China has significantly improved its higher education standing, boasting 16 universities in the global top 20 during 2020-2023, including 8 in the top 10. This marks a substantial increase from 2006-2009, when only one Chinese university was ranked in this group. Zhejiang University holds the top position.

The ranking is based on the number of university publications over the period from year (n-4) to year (n-1), with collaborative publications counted fractionally. The US has 4 universities in the top 20, the UK has 1, and other countries make up 3. China's rapid growth reflects its strengthening scientific capabilities.

Zhejiang University is recognized as China's leading institution, and its top ranking underscores the quality and quantity of its research output. Projections indicate this leadership is likely to grow in the next three years.

This trend signals a global shift in academic leadership, with China actively enhancing its research profile and aspiring to be a dominant player in global education and scientific research.

It is expected that Chinese universities will continue expanding their academic reach, competing with American and European institutions for the highest ranks in global university standings.
