China to tighten air quality standards amid record low pollution in Beijing

Chinese authorities have proposed reducing the annual limit for fine particulate matter PM2.5 from 35 to 25 micrograms per cubic metre by 2031. This move is significant as PM2.5 particles are the smallest dust and soot particles considered the main indicator of air pollution.

The proposal follows reports of Beijing’s cleanest air on record. In 2025, the city’s average annual PM2.5 concentration fell to 27 µg/m³ — the first time it dropped below 30 µg/m³. Last year, Beijing recorded fewer than one day with severe pollution, with over 95% of days classified as having good or moderate air quality.

уDespite improvements, the current pollution levels in the capital still exceed the World Health Organization’s recommendations. Strengthening air quality standards is therefore a necessary step to further enhance public heal and environmental conditions.
