China condemns US seizure of Russian tanker “Marinera” as a violation of international law
China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that Beijing opposes the unilateral actions taken by the United States in detaining the Russian tanker “Marinera” in international waters, considering this a breach of international law.
Mao Ning emphasised that such measures contradict the UN Charter and its foundational principles and represent an unacceptable infringement on Russia’s sovereignty and security. On January 7, the US Navy seized the tanker in the North Atlantic and escorted it to an American port, citing suspicions of sanctions violations. Moscow has called the incident an illegal capture and a breach of maritime freedom, demanding the immediate release of the vessel.
This incident heightens tensions between the involved nations and highlights the complex challenges surrounding sanctions enforcement and maritime navigation rights, potentially affecting future developments in the region.
