Cameras containing Chinese components were discovered on British K3 Scout unmanned surface vessels; these cameras were sending signals in the background to a device in China. The drones are used by the Royal Marines, particularly for reconnaissance and operational planning. The British Ministry of Defense has already disabled the cameras’ network connections but states that no evidence of a leak of sensitive data has been found so far.

 

The Royal Marines have been using the fleet of K3 Scout unmanned boats, which cost approximately 12 million pounds, since March. During a routine cybersecurity audit, specialists noticed the cameras installed on these vessels. It turned out that the cameras contained components manufactured in China. According to the publication, they could have been sending signals in the background to a device located in China.

What data could have been leaked

The information potentially transmitted could have included images of British military personnel’s faces, as well as data on training and operations. A particular concern was where exactly these drones were being used. According to sources cited by The Telegraph, the K3 Scouts may have been operating near closed-door meetings of British special forces leadership in Poole.

There were also fears that the cameras might have continued recording video even when the unmanned boats themselves were turned off. At the same time, the British Ministry of Defense stated that it currently has no evidence of any compromise of sensitive systems or data. After the issue was discovered, all network connections to the cameras were disabled.

The drones were being prepared for a mission in the Strait of Hormuz

According to the publication’s sources within the defense ministry, the K3 Scout was used to record footage related to preparations for British participation in an international mission to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The discovered issue has shaken confidence in the platform. Sources described the situation as a serious oversight during the verification of the components’ origin.

The boat manufacturer, Kraken Technology Group, stated that the cameras were supplied by a third-party contractor. According to the company, this contractor assured them that the equipment complied with the requirements of the NDAA—a U.S. law that, among other things, restricts the use of Chinese equipment in defense procurement. Following a joint audit with the Navy, the company stated that sensitive information had not been transmitted outside of authorized channels. It also reported that the identified vulnerabilities had already been addressed.

Why This Matters for the British Navy

The incident poses a problem not only for this specific batch of unmanned surface vessels. It could impact Project Beehive—a program through which the Royal Navy is attempting to integrate unmanned systems with traditional warships. The K3 Scout is also used by the UK’s Special Operations Command.

Therefore, the question of the origin of even individual components of such systems is of particular importance. A camera or other small device could serve as a potential channel for gathering technical or operational information. The British side is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident. The main question is whether the data actually remained within the intended channels and how widely the identified vulnerability could have spread. This is reported by The Telegraph.

The American company Haddy has created the TF-179 unmanned surface vessel using large-format 3D printing. The developers say that this technology allows for faster creation and testing of new maritime platforms. However, the key specifications of the drone and its client have not yet been disclosed.
