Chinese educators criticize education system for favoring elite students
Leading Chinese experts at the China Education 30 forum in Beijing stated that the current education system focuses on a narrow group of top-performing students and neglects the interests of the majority. This creates inequality and increases psychological stress among learners.

Gu Minyuan, honorary chairman of the China Education Society, noted that about 80% of students are forced to "run alongside" the 20% elite targeted by the admissions system for leading universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University. However, this path is realistically accessible only to one-fifth of students, yet it sets the educational standards for all.
Forum participants emphasize that the intense competition for high scores leads to burnout, depression, and emotional emptiness among young people, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the country’s educational approach.
