Chinese court recognizes verbal abuse in marriage as domestic violence
China’s Supreme People’s Court has officially recognized verbal insults, defamation, economic control, and restrictions on social contacts within marriage as forms of domestic violence, marking a significant step in combating domestic abuse.
The court emphasized that psychological violence is often more hidden and harder to prove than physical violence, but its consequences can be equally severe. Since the 2016 domestic violence law came into effect, Chinese courts have issued more than 33,000 protection orders.
Court representatives pointed out that violence is not limited to the forms specified in the law and will be assessed based on the specific circumstances of each case, ensuring enhanced protection for victims.
This development reflects the Chinese authorities’ determination to tackle all forms of domestic violence, recognizing the serious physical and psychological harm it can cause.
Looking ahead, this legal approach may improve the protection of domestic violence victims’ rights and increase public awareness of the complexity and diversity of domestic abuse issues
