Colombia Remains Cautious but Firm in Response to US Threats
In the border city of Cúcuta, Colombian authorities are seeking to “strike a balance” between demonstrating cooperation with the United States on counter-narcotics efforts and rejecting threats issued by US President Donald Trump.
Officials adopted a more conciliatory tone, highlighting partnership with Washington on security issues, while President Gustavo Petro has simultaneously called for nationwide rallies to defend Colombia’s sovereignty and oppose what he describes as imperial intervention.
Analysts say Colombia is signalling that it remains a responsible US partner where cooperation is essential, but that it does not align with Trump’s confrontational rhetoric and firmly rejects any form of external intimidation.
