The U.S. Congress has refused to fund Trump's favorite news outlet – CNN
U.S. lawmakers voted to restore funding for key divisions of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ending a 75-day budget crisis. The bill provides funding for the Transportation Security Administration but completely excludes funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
CNN reports this, noting that the bill has already been sent to U.S. President Donald Trump for his signature.
The passage of the package was the result of a compromise between centrists and Republican Party leadership, who sought to avoid further shutdowns of the agency before the congressional recess. The lack of funding for ICE was a political victory for Democrats, sparking a wave of outrage among the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Despite internal disputes, Speaker Mike Johnson agreed to put the bill to a vote to restore pay for aviation industry employees and other critical services.
The prolonged shutdown led to serious disruptions at airports, where ICE agents partially filled in for Transportation Security Administration staff due to staffing shortages. Because of the Democrats’ stance, Congress was unable to reach an agreement on funding for the department for a long time, threatening national security. The final decision to pass the bill without funding for the immigration service allowed most DHS units to resume operations, but left the issue of ICE funding open for future discussion.
The U.S. presidential administration granted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) expanded powers to detain legal refugees who are in the process of awaiting green cards.
As a reminder, an open conflict has erupted within U.S. President Donald Trump’s inner circle over the administration’s response to the killing of U.S. citizen Alex Pretty by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
