The countries of Northern Europe and the Baltic states demanded at the UN the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine
The countries of Northern Europe and the Baltic states have demanded the immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
A joint statement on behalf of Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, and Finland was delivered by Heli Lehto, Deputy Permanent Representative of Finland to the UN, at a UN General Assembly meeting on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories.
The statement emphasized that respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is a necessary prerequisite for achieving a just and lasting peace. The Finnish representative drew attention to the sharp increase in 2026 in the number of Russian attacks on civilian targets, which resulted in the highest civilian casualty rate since March 2022, as well as the widespread arbitrary detentions, torture, sexual violence, and forced deportation of Ukrainian children. The signatory countries reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to establishing a Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine and to supporting the work of the International Criminal Court.

Russia must immediately, fully, and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory, and the international community must intensify diplomatic efforts to end the war. This was stated by UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock during a debate on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the UN Security Council’s inability to effectively counter Russia’s actions is a disgrace.
