70% of young Americans are not proud of the direction of the US — poll
Seven in ten Americans aged 18 to 34 said they are not proud of the direction in which the United States is heading as a country. The results of a survey by the Sine Institute of Policy & Politics at American University are reported by The Hill.
Assessments of the present and the past
Seventy percent of respondents said they do not feel proud of the country’s direction. Another 71% of those surveyed said they are not proud of the current state of the United States.
At the same time, 59% of study participants said they are proud of what the United States was like in the past. The survey covered younger members of the millennial generation and adult members of Generation Z.

Study details
The study was conducted from July 23 to August 1 and included 1,031 respondents. The institute noted that this age group grew up amid significant political divisions in the United States and experienced events ranging from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Molly O’Rourke, a senior adviser at the institute, said that young people live in a rapidly changing country and often have responsibilities that extend far beyond themselves. According to her, this group’s views on the state of the country tell an important story about this generation.
Political context
The Hill notes that the survey was released amid growing doubts among Americans about the Trump administration’s actions in the US war with Iran, the rising cost of living, and immigration. According to the Decision Desk HQ polling average, on Tuesday evening the president’s approval rating stood at 39.2%, while disapproval was 57.2%.
