The emperor's decision

As The Japan Times reports, the Norwegian royal family informed Emperor Naruhito about the funeral. The Japanese imperial family follows a tradition under which the emperor does not attend funerals. At the same time, Naruhito, who was crown prince at the time, attended the funeral of King Olav V in 1991. Olav V was the father of the late King Harald V, so the emperor decided to send Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko to the ceremony.
