Heavy rain forecast in several regions of Japan
Heavy rain is expected in Japan’s Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions on Monday as an atmospheric front located over the Pacific Ocean near the country shifts northward. Significant rainfall is also possible along the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region and in western parts of the country, The Japan Times reports.
Risks of landslides and flooding
The Japan Meteorological Agency urged caution because of the risk of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and rising river water levels. Meteorologists also warned of possible lightning strikes and strong wind gusts.
Information was issued for the eastern part of the Kanto region and Tokai about the possible formation of linear zones of intense rainfall. On the Izu Islands, which belong to Tokyo, they may form by early Monday morning. In Aichi and Mie prefectures, such zones are possible from Sunday night until Monday morning, and in Shizuoka, from Sunday night until shortly before noon.
The same forecast applies to Tokyo, excluding the Izu and Ogasawara Islands, as well as the neighboring prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa: linear rainfall zones may emerge from late Sunday night until shortly before noon on Monday.

Tropical Storm Krovan
On Sunday morning, heavy rain had already fallen in some areas along the Pacific coast of eastern and western Japan. The weather was affected by an atmospheric front and Tropical Storm Krovan, which was near Okinawa’s main island.
On Hachijo Island in the Izu group, 84 millimeters of rain fell in the hour before 6:35, while 240.5 millimeters fell in the six hours before 8:30. As of 9:00, the storm was moving east-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, about 190 kilometers from Naha. It is forecast to become a tropical depression over the sea east of the Amami Islands on Tuesday.
By 6:00 Monday, up to 300 millimeters of rainfall are expected in Tokai, up to 250 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin, up to 200 millimeters in the Kinki region, and up to 150 millimeters in southern Kyushu and the Shikoku region. In the following 24 hours, until 6:00 Tuesday, up to 200 millimeters of rain may fall in Tohoku and Tokai, up to 150 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin, and up to 120 millimeters in Kinki.
