Latvia has temporarily closed its border with Belarus
On the evening of July 31, Latvia temporarily closed its border with Belarus due to technical malfunctions in its information systems. Citizens who had planned to return to the country via Belarus were urged to use alternative routes.
According to the minister, crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border is currently impossible due to technical issues.
“For technical reasons, the border between Latvia and Belarus is closed. We ask those who have not yet returned to Latvia to use other routes,” Dombrova wrote on Facebook.
The Latvian State Border Guard Service clarified that there have been malfunctions in the information systems at the “Paternieki” border crossing, making it temporarily impossible to conduct border controls.
Border guards noted that information regarding the resumption of operations at the checkpoint will be published on the official website.
The Latvian cyber incident response center Cert.lv reported that no signs of external interference or a cyberattack have been detected so far.
According to preliminary data, the issue appears to be related to local technical problems, and specialists are already providing support to the border service to restore the information systems as quickly as possible.
The day before, Janis Dombravas advised citizens to refrain from traveling to Belarus and from returning via Belarus.
According to him, this is due to a hybrid migration attack which, according to Latvian authorities, is being carried out by Belarus and may complicate safe travel between the two countries.
