Alma leader calls for urgent meeting of Cyprus National Council — Cyprus Mail

In Cyprus, Alma leader Odysseas Michaelides called for the immediate convening of the National Council to brief political leaders on developments surrounding the Cyprus issue following contacts in New York. Cyprus Mail reports.

Criticism of the president

In a statement, Michaelides criticised the approach of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to the Cyprus issue. He said that before the meetings in New York, the president had created expectations of progress but returned without tangible results.

During the visit, Christodoulides met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. At the same time, a proposed trilateral meeting involving Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman did not take place. The parties gave different explanations for why the meeting did not take place.

Demand for full briefing

According to Michaelides, Christodoulides inherited the Cyprus issue in a deadlock, but after three and a half years, the situation has, in his view, deteriorated even further.

The Alma leader also accused the government of raising expectations over the past four months about important developments, including a possible settlement plan by the end of the year. In Michaelides' view, the results of the latest contacts could create the impression in society that expectations were either deliberately inflated for communication purposes or that the authorities had misjudged the political situation. He insisted on the immediate convening of the National Council for a full briefing on the situation following this setback.
