Singapore leaders offer condolences to Mahathir over wife’s death — Channel NewsAsia

In Singapore, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed their condolences to former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad following the death of his wife, Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. She was 100 years old, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Contribution to Malaysia’s public life

Siti Hasmah was a physician and advocated for maternal health, family planning, literacy, drug abuse prevention and mental health support. Lawrence Wong called her a pioneer in her field, noting her contributions to Malaysia’s healthcare, education and social causes.

Singapore’s prime minister also conveyed words of support to Mahathir and his family. The couple had been married since 1956 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August.

Lee Hsien Loong’s memories

Lee Hsien Loong said that he had known Siti Hasmah for many years and had always enjoyed meeting her. He recalled her love of music and violin playing: she continued to perform even after the age of 90, including to raise funds for charity.

According to Lee, the physician devoted a significant part of her life to improving the health and well-being of Malaysians, especially women, children and families.
