Lithuania has lodged a protest with Russia over the demolition of a memorial to deportees in Tomsk

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a protest with Russia over the dismantling of a memorial dedicated to Lithuanian deportees in the city of Tomsk.

This was reported by LRT.

According to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, on April 19, a memorial stone erected in 2016 in Tomsk to honor the victims of deportations was demolished. Along with it, memorials dedicated to deportees from Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and Kalmykia were also removed, as well as the “Stone of Sorrow” for victims of political repression.

In response, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Russian Embassy and handed him a note of protest.

Vilnius stated that it views such actions as an attempt to distort historical truth and disrespect the memory of the victims of the Soviet totalitarian regime.

The Foreign Ministry emphasized that this is not the first instance of such memorials being dismantled in Russia.
