Madyar calls for the resignation of the Hungarian president and promises to strengthen NATO
Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition party "Tisa," officially called on President Tamás Szujok to resign during a rally attended by thousands in Budapest.
The politician is demanding an immediate overhaul of the entire government apparatus following his party’s decisive victory in the elections.
According to results from 98.93% of the votes counted, the Tisa party received 69.35% of the vote.
This gives the opposition 138 seats in parliament, allowing it to form a constitutional majority on its own.
Meanwhile, Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party suffered a defeat, receiving only 27.64% of the vote and 55 seats. The “Our Homeland” party became the third-largest force in parliament, winning 3.02% of the vote.
Péter Magyar emphasized that the old system has run its course, and the current government must make way for new leaders. The politician considers President Tamás Szujok to be part of the mechanism that Viktor Orbán has built over many years.
“I call on the President of the Republic to ask me to form a government and then step down from his post. I call on all the puppets to do the same,” the leader of Tisza said during his speech.
The new government’s top priority will be a complete pivot of Hungary’s foreign policy toward the West. Magyar plans to definitively end the policy of “balancing,” which has long caused conflicts with international partners.
According to the politician, the state must become a predictable and reliable partner for the international community. Particular attention will be paid to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities directly within the NATO Alliance.
“We will restore the functioning of the institutions that ensure democracy and its independence. Hungary will once again become a strong ally in the European Union and NATO,” Magyar emphasized.
An important step for the new leader will be a visit to Brussels to unblock frozen financial assets.
These funds were frozen by the European Union due to numerous violations of the rule of law by the previous government.
As a reminder, in Hungary, the opposition has a chance to defeat Orbán for the first time in many years.
Orbán and Mádor also held mass rallies in Budapest ahead of the elections.
