Mahama orders review of Ghana senior high school menus — MyJoyOnline

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a review of menus for senior high school students to improve the quality of meals. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said that adequate food supplies have been provided for students for the 2026/2027 academic year, MyJoyOnline reports.

Minister’s statement

Iddrisu announced the president’s directive during a visit to Tarkwa Senior High School on September 18, when students were returning to classes. According to him, the ministry will conduct an additional analysis of the data to ensure that students do not face food shortages.

The statements came amid authorities’ efforts to address food-related problems under the Free SHS free senior high school education programme. Mahama previously said he inherited the programme, which had been introduced without a separate source of funding. According to him, this contributed to delays in budget disbursements and food shortages.

Funding and academic calendar

For meals for Free SHS students in 2026, the government allocated 4.2 billion Ghanaian cedis out of the programme’s total funding of 9.6 billion cedis. The president also said that the authorities had created separate funding mechanisms for senior high schools and student meals.

The education minister announced plans to increase the feeding grant from 8 to 15 Ghanaian cedis per student. Details of the updated menu and the date of its introduction have not yet been announced.

Students at senior high and senior technical schools resumed classes on September 18 after the Ghana Education Service published the calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year. First- and second-form students in single-track schools are to complete the academic year on July 30, 2027, while third-form students are to finish on June 18, 2027, alongside the completion of the WASSCE examinations.
