McConnell returns to the US Senate after months-long absence
Republican Senator from Kentucky Mitch McConnell said on September 14 that he would cast his first vote in the US Senate in Washington after a months-long absence related to his hospitalization in June following a fall. He announced this in a post on X, TIME reports.
McConnell said he was looking forward to returning to the Senate chamber and meeting with his colleagues. According to him, recovery has been a long and often difficult process.
Recovery after hospitalization
The 84-year-old politician said that his rehabilitation was also affected by the consequences of polio, which he had as a child. He added that he had not yet fully recovered but was continuing physical therapy on doctors’ recommendations.

McConnell said he assured Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he would try to be present for important votes when needed by the Republican conference.
What is known about his health condition
The senator was hospitalized on June 14. Several weeks later, he said that he briefly lost consciousness after the fall and later developed mild pneumonia. McConnell also said doctors found no fractures, concussion, or tumors, and that he did not have a heart attack.
At the end of July, his office said that the senator had been discharged from the hospital, but at that time he was still in a rehabilitation center and had not received medical clearance to return to the upper chamber of Congress. On August 6, McConnell’s office announced his discharge from the rehabilitation facility to continue recovering at home. He plans to retire in January, when his term expires.
