Malaysia calls for challenges to UN Security Council veto use — Anadolu Agency
In New York, United States, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan called for action against Israel over Palestine during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. As Anadolu Agency reports, he also expressed support for Palestine’s full membership in the UN.
Criticism of the use of the veto
Hasan said that Malaysia had promoted the idea of punitive measures against Israel. According to him, the collective will of General Assembly members has repeatedly faced the consequences of the use of the veto power.
The minister said UN reform was particularly necessary in the context of the Security Council’s work. He called on all member states of the General Assembly to question and firmly challenge the use of the veto, particularly in cases of crimes against humanity.

According to Hasan, paralysis of the Security Council must not mean paralysis of the entire United Nations.
Artificial intelligence and trade routes
Malaysia’s foreign minister also said that global rules in the field of artificial intelligence should not be determined by only a few states or corporations. He called for broader participation by countries of the Global South in technology governance and stressed that they should be partners in innovation, not merely markets and consumers.
Hasan warned that the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East threatens important energy and trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. According to him, families in Southeast Asia are feeling the effects through rising food and fuel prices and a higher cost of living. Malaysia called on all parties to refrain from escalation and turn to diplomacy.
