Mateusz Szurek has been appointed to a key position at the International Monetary Fund
Former Polish Finance Minister Mateusz Szurek will take over as head of the International Monetary Fund’s European Department at the end of July. He will succeed Alfred Kammer in this role and will be responsible for economic policy and the IMF’s cooperation with European countries, including Ukraine.
The Fund emphasizes that his experience in public administration and international financial institutions should strengthen the organization’s work in the region.
Former Polish Finance Minister Mateusz Szurek will officially become Director of the European Department at the International Monetary Fund on July 27, taking on one of the key positions responsible for economic policy, reforms, and the Fund’s financial engagement with European countries.
Szczurek has significant experience working in both the public sector and international financial institutions: from 2013 to 2015, he headed the Polish Ministry of Finance, and later worked at leading European financial institutions, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The IMF emphasized that his appointment is expected to strengthen the Fund’s engagement with European countries and enhance the effectiveness of economic dialogue. “Mateusz’s unique combination of managerial skills and political leadership, as well as his deep knowledge of the European economic landscape, will be an invaluable contribution to the development of the Fund’s cooperation with its European members,” noted IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
According to the IMF, from 2016 to 2024, Szurek held senior positions at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where he was responsible for macroeconomic analysis, reform monitoring, and policy dialogue in EU countries, and also participated in the work of the European Fiscal Board.
Prior to his work in the Polish government, he also served as chief economist at ING Bank for the Central and Eastern Europe region, and before that, he taught international economics and public finance at the University of Warsaw.
The IMF’s European Department plays a key role in the Fund’s cooperation with countries in the region, providing financial support, economic policy advice, and technical assistance, including to Ukraine, which remains one of the institution’s key areas of focus. This was reported by the IMF.
