The Ukrainian diaspora in Canada is calling for increased pressure on Russia
The Ukrainian diaspora in Canada is calling on Ukraine’s international partners to significantly increase pressure on Russia following the latest nighttime attacks, as well as to provide Kyiv with more air defense systems. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress emphasizes that current measures are insufficient to stop Russian aggression.
They are also proposing more radical steps—ranging from a complete trade embargo to the confiscation of Russian assets and the designation of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Oleksandra Khychii, stated that Ukraine’s international partners should not limit themselves to political statements but must move to concrete actions capable of changing Russia’s behavior and strengthening Ukraine’s defense against nighttime strikes and missile attacks.
According to Khychii, Ukraine’s allies have sufficient resources to strengthen Kyiv’s defenses, particularly by providing additional air defense systems and ammunition needed to protect the skies. “Ukraine’s partners have the ammunition Ukraine needs to defend its skies. Ukraine’s partners can further isolate Russia by imposing a full trade embargo, closing Russian embassies, confiscating Russian property, and designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism,” she emphasized.
The head of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee stressed that Canada must take on a leadership role in this process and set an example for other countries by taking more decisive action without delay. “The consequences of Russia’s prolonged, systematic, and outrageous terrorist campaign against Ukrainian civilians cannot be limited to yet another condemnation,” she added.
The diaspora organization is convinced that without tougher sanctions and real pressure on Moscow, international condemnations will not have sufficient impact, and Russian attacks against Ukraine will continue. This was reported by a correspondent for “Ukrinform.”
The Swedish defense company Saab is considering the possibility of launching the assembly of Gripen fighter jets in Canada, and this could become part of the future logistics for supplying aircraft to Ukraine. The decision directly depends on whether Canada chooses these aircraft to modernize its air force.
