Video: Five people died in a fire on a ferry in Indonesia
In Indonesia, during a voyage from Surabaya (East Java) to Makassar (South Sulawesi), the passenger ferry KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire near the island of Madura, with 271 people on board.
The local search and rescue agency (Basarnas) received a distress signal in the morning. Within a short time, the flames had almost completely engulfed the vessel. Rescuers recovered the bodies of five passengers who had died, and the fate of another 41 people is currently being determined.
Passengers were evacuated using life jackets and lifeboats as smoke and flames billowed from the ship’s upper decks. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing.
