Belarus is forming a new airborne assault brigade near the border with Ukraine

Belarus has begun forming a new 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade, which will be stationed near Gomel—approximately 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. Alexander Ilyukevich, commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, announced this on the Belarusian military television channel.

Currently, the first battalion of the new unit has already been formed, officers have been recruited, and conscripts have been called up. By the end of this year, the plan is to complete the staffing of the second battalion, as well as reconnaissance, artillery, air defense, and logistical support units.

The full redeployment of the brigade’s military units to their permanent bases near Gomel is scheduled to take place in 2027. The new unit will become the country’s fourth airborne brigade and will be stationed closest to the Ukrainian border.

As a reminder, Lukashenko stated that Belarusian servicemen will not take part in the war against Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that one should not be naive about Belarus’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to him, Minsk is under Moscow’s strong influence, and most of the Belarusian government’s decisions are effectively dictated by the Kremlin.
