U.S. Allies See Washington's Strategic Defeat in the War with Iran — The New York Times
The U.S.'s strategic defeat in Iran is becoming increasingly evident. Despite significant losses, Tehran has maintained its influence, while Washington's standing, according to analysts, has weakened.
According to The New York Times, none of U.S. President Donald Trump’s key objectives have been achieved so far. Iran, despite the damage inflicted, has retained control of the situation, and its nuclear and missile programs have been weakened but not eliminated. At the same time, the U.S. continues to expend significant military resources, and its allies are increasingly doubting Washington’s ability to guarantee security.
Robin Niblett, former director of the British think tank Chatham House, stated that the conflict served as a wake-up call for U.S. partners.
“For U.S. allies and those who rely on the United States for security, this is confirmation that the United States cannot be trusted,” he said.
As the NYT notes, an increasing number of countries are seeking to reduce their dependence on the U.S. and are more actively developing relations with other centers of power.
The publication also notes that the war has affected not only the U.S. position but also that of Israel. In particular, the shortage of modern air defense systems, notably Patriot missiles, is already impacting Washington’s ability to support its allies, including Ukraine.
According to experts, one of the main indicators of U.S. strategic failure is the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Ali Vaez, director of the Iran program at the International Crisis Group, noted that Tehran views control of the strait as leverage to extract concessions from Washington and secure guarantees against new attacks.
Former U.S. negotiator Aaron David Miller emphasized that if Iran were to establish control over the Strait of Hormuz, it would represent a strategic defeat for the U.S.
The New York Times concludes that Washington has not yet presented a clear plan to end the conflict, and relations between the U.S. and Iran are likely to remain a cycle of temporary truces and new escalations in the near future.
