During the EU summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed understanding for the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who blocked a €90 billion loan to Ukraine.
This was reported by Politico.
According to diplomats, during a closed-door meeting, Meloni stated that she understands the reasons behind Orbán’s actions, particularly given the domestic political situation and the upcoming elections in Hungary.
At the same time, she emphasized that she personally supports providing financial aid to Ukraine as soon as possible.
One of the diplomats noted that the Italian prime minister called Orbán’s position “normal” given that the political situation could change.
Also, according to sources, Meloni suggested that Hungary might stop blocking the aid once the Druzhba oil pipeline resumes operations.
However, the Italian government denied these statements, calling them baseless.
As noted, most other EU leaders reacted negatively to Orbán’s stance. European Council President António Costa called the blocking of aid unacceptable and a violation of the principles of cooperation within the European Union.
