Mary Peltola Rejected Kamala Harris's Endorsement in Her Senate Campaign

Mary Peltola, the Democratic Party’s candidate for the U.S. Senate from Alaska, has rejected the endorsement of former Vice President Kamala Harris. This came after Harris’s political organization sent a letter to Peltola’s supporters urging them to make donations.

The letter, signed by Kamala Harris, stated that Peltola could win in Alaska and help Democrats secure a majority in the Senate. Recipients were asked to donate to Fight for the People PAC, which Harris established last year. According to the letter, the contributions were to be split between that organization and Peltola’s campaign.

A spokesperson for Peltola’s campaign told KTUU that the candidate is not seeking support from anyone in the Lower 48—the term used in the U.S. to refer to the 48 contiguous states excluding Alaska and Hawaii. According to the spokesperson, her focus is on Alaska. The campaign also highlighted support from the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, the Alaska chapter of the AFL-CIO, the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electricians No. 1547, and more than 10,000 Alaskans who have signed up as volunteers.

Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is Peltola’s opponent, used a mailing in his campaign. His spokesperson, Nate Adams, stated that Harris supported the policies of the Joe Biden administration, which he called “anti-Alaska,” and that the state’s voters rejected her by a double-digit margin.

In the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris lost Alaska to Donald Trump by a margin of 13 percentage points. Harris became the Democratic nominee in place of Biden after growing concerns about his ability to continue his reelection campaign. She subsequently lost to Trump both in the Electoral College and in the popular vote.
