Merkel no longer blames Poland and the Baltic States for Russia’s War in Ukraine

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called claims that she allegedly blames Poland and the Baltic states for Russia’s attack on Ukraine fake news.

According to DPA, Merkel explained that a passage in her autobiography “Freedom”, which mentioned Poland and the Baltic countries, was taken out of context. The passage referred to the refusal of four states to participate in a dialogue format with Russia proposed by Merkel in 2021, and it was not related to assigning blame.

Merkel emphasized that the war in Ukraine is an act of aggression by Russia and Vladimir Putin. She also noted that the coronavirus pandemic affected the formats of diplomatic dialogue and, in her view, partly contributed to Putin’s decision to launch a full-scale war.

Germany had planned to help Russia establish eight modern military training centers — this was before Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014.
