Merz and the British Prime Minister agreed to step up support for Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, discussed continued support for Ukraine during their first phone call. The two sides also focused on stepping up pressure on Russia.
The leaders agreed to continue close cooperation between their countries and to promote the implementation of the Kensington Treaty. This treaty, a bilateral friendship agreement, was signed in London on July 17, 2025, by Merz and Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer.
Regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine, both leaders agreed to continue providing comprehensive support to Kyiv and to intensify pressure on Russia. They pledged to remain committed to serious negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.
Earlier on Monday, Bernam held telephone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Andy Burnham is a 56-year-old British politician and the newly elected leader of the ruling Labour Party of Great Britain, who is set to replace Keir Starmer as the country’s prime minister. Due to his active and uncompromising defense of his region’s interests, he has earned the nickname “King of the North” in political circles and the media.
