Merz met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan days after a major deal was signed for 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets. At their joint press conference, they discussed human rights issues and the detention of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Although Berlin and Ankara diverge on the Gaza conflict, Merz stated that “there is no way around a stronger partnership.” He added that Europe is entering “a new geopolitical phase” that requires building and expanding strategic alliances.
