In Florida, boat captain saves diver after shark attack

Off the coast of Florida, boat captain Jacob Johnson saved a 40-year-old diver who was attacked by a bull shark during a dive. The incident occurred about 30 miles from shore, near the Emerald Coast.

Help in the water

According to NDTV World, Johnson heard the diver calling for help and saying that he had been bitten. At first, the captain assumed the injury might be minor, but when he looked overboard, he saw blood around the man.

The shark bit the diver on the forearm, and he could not get back aboard on his own. Johnson jumped into the water and helped pull the injured man onto the boat, away from the shark.

First aid on board

On board, members of the group began providing first aid to the victim to reduce blood loss, while the boat headed toward shore to meet medical personnel. According to Johnson, one person took off a shirt to apply a tourniquet, while another used a blood-clotting agent. The tourniquet was also secured with plastic zip ties.

The injured man was taken to the nearest hospital for emergency care. Johnson said he had no time to assess the risks and immediately jumped into the water, while the other people on board acted instinctively and joined the effort to save the diver.
