More than 805,000 applications submitted for Grades 1 and 8 in Gauteng — TimesLIVE
In South Africa’s Gauteng province, 805,688 online applications were submitted for admission to Grades 1 and 8 for the 2027 school year. As reported by TimesLIVE, 357,468 parents and guardians had registered in the system by the time it closed at midnight on Friday.
Gauteng MEC for Education Lebogang Maile clarified that the number of applications does not equal the number of children needing school places, as parents can apply to several institutions at once. The system recorded 169,396 unique learners for Grade 1 and 177,481 for Grade 8. In total, this concerns 346,877 individual learners.
Highest demand for certain schools
According to Maile, the data demonstrates the scale of the education department’s work, as well as the concentration of demand at certain schools and in particular areas. Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West received the highest number of Grade 8 applications — 3,462. It was followed by Alberton High School with 2,756 applications, Katlehong Secondary School with 2,747, Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation with 2,573, and Parktown Boys’ High School with 2,448.

Among schools admitting Grade 1 learners, Laerskool Akasia received the most applications — 1,355. Palmridge Primary School received 1,330 applications, Alston Primary School 1,207, Lakeside Primary School 1,162, and Stoneridge Primary School 1,153.
Document verification before placement
Maile noted that the end of the application period does not mean that admission offers will be sent immediately. Schools must first verify the authenticity of the submitted documents, after which the applications will be sent to the relevant district authorities for quality control.
Parents and guardians who need to submit missing documents were urged to provide certified copies by noon on September 11. Proof of a home address is particularly important, as it is used to determine school placement. Applications without valid certified proof of address, or with invalid or fraudulent documents, will be considered incomplete and will not receive an admission offer.
