Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has officially agreed to form a new center-left minority coalition government, successfully concluding the longest negotiations in the country’s history.

This complex political compromise put an end to the prolonged uncertainty that prevailed after the March parliamentary elections and allowed the 48-year-old Social Democratic leader to head the country’s executive branch for the third consecutive term.

Previous attempts to form both a broad coalition and a center-right cabinet led by incumbent Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen had failed.

Political consultations lasted 69 days because, following the spring election, representatives from 12 different political parties entered the Danish parliament, and none of the traditional blocs secured an absolute majority.

“I visited His Majesty the King and informed him that, following lengthy negotiations, a government can be formed,” the head of government told reporters after meeting with King Frederik X.

She also added that despite all the difficulties, politicians were obliged to tackle this task for the sake of the voters.

In addition to the Social Democratic Party, the newly formed coalition government includes the Social Liberals, the Left Greens, and the centrist Moderates.

To pass key decisions in parliament, the new coalition will rely on the consistent support of other left-wing forces, primarily the “Red-Green Alliance.”

“This is a government platform for the people living in Denmark, for future generations, and also for animals,” Frederiksen emphasized, highlighting the importance of the program’s environmental and social components.

The new format of the executive branch marks the incumbent prime minister’s return to a traditional center-left approach to governing the country.

Over the past four years, she has been forced to lead an overly broad coalition that united both the left and right political forces in the country.

The main strategic priorities of the new government program are expected to be presented on June 2, and the full lineup of the cabinet will be officially announced the following day.
