Migration to the EU hits a record high: France reports an unusual breakdown of refugees

In 2025, the number of immigrants in the European Union reached a record 64.2 million, which is nearly 60% more than 15 years ago.

This was reported by Reuters.

A distinctive feature of France is the even distribution of asylum seekers. Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Afghanistan each account for approximately 10% of the total number of applications, which significantly sets the country apart from other EU member states.

By comparison, in Germany, over 40% of applications come from citizens of Afghanistan and Syria; in Spain, Venezuelans account for about 60%; and in Italy, people from Bangladesh lead the list.

At the same time, the total number of asylum applications in the EU in 2025 fell to 669,000, which is more than a quarter lower than the previous year.

Most applications are concentrated in four countries: Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. Outside this group, the figures are significantly lower.

Germany remains the largest migration hub in Europe—it is home to about 18 million people born abroad. At the same time, Spain is showing the fastest growth, with the number of foreigners increasing by nearly 700,000 over the past year.

Next week, Paris and Athens will officially renew their bilateral security agreement, extending its term for the next five years.

The French Ministry of Defense has joined forces with industrial giants Turgis Gaillard and Renault to create a new strike drone called “Chorus.”
