Ghanaian minister calls for upgrading Zongo communities without evicting residents
In Accra, Ghana, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga called for the comprehensive upgrading of Zongo communities without evicting their residents. According to him, this approach should help address long-standing problems with sanitation, housing and basic infrastructure.
Upgrading without evictions
As MyJoyOnline reports, the minister said the government should transform these communities while allowing people to remain in their own homes. He stressed that territories can be upgraded without relocating residents outside their community.
Ayariga spoke at a conference of Zongo chiefs in Accra dedicated to the development agenda for these communities. He noted that difficult conditions in some urban Zongo communities reflect deeply rooted social and economic inequalities that require targeted intervention.

Problems of urban communities
Among the main problems that the upgrading should address, the minister named an insufficient number of sanitation facilities, inadequate housing conditions and limited access roads.
Ayariga also described his appointment as an opportunity to resume work on the development of Zongo communities. He recalled that he has engaged with them since studying law and working as a lawyer. According to him, tangible changes require cooperation between the government, traditional authorities and community leaders.
