Ghana’s transport minister acknowledges container congestion at Tema Port
Ghana’s Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe acknowledged persistent container congestion at Tema Port and said the government intends to accelerate infrastructure work to address the problem. He said this during a visit to the Meridian Port Services terminal in Tema, MyJoyOnline reports.
Infrastructure is not keeping pace with cargo flows
According to Nikpe, one reason for the congestion is that infrastructure has not developed at the same pace as cargo volumes. He noted that the development of Terminal 3 significantly increased the port’s capacity, but other facilities in the transport network connected to it have not received adequate expansion.
The minister discussed measures with terminal management to improve the movement of cargo to and from the facility. He also stressed that container congestion at the port is a concern for both the authorities and terminal operators.

Planned works
The Ghanaian government is considering road upgrades and route expansion within the harbor, as well as the creation of additional berths to accommodate more vessels. Nikpe assured port operators and other stakeholders that the proposed measures are planned to be accelerated.
According to him, the works should help eliminate congestion, improve the efficiency of Tema Port and preserve Ghana’s position as an attractive destination for maritime trade.
