Young buyers in the UAE choose lighter gold jewelry — The National

In the UAE, young buyers are increasingly choosing light and modern gold jewelry instead of massive traditional pieces for everyday wear. At the same time, gold retains its role for them as a gift, family heirloom and investment, The National reports.

Jewelry retailers note that heavy pieces remain popular for weddings and other special occasions. However, millennials and Generation Z representatives more often buy light chains, rings, bracelets and pendants for everyday life that suit their style, budget and lifestyle.

Practicality and design

Amrin Iqbal, founder and creative director of the Dubai-based brand Piece of You, said that buyers of different ages are increasingly looking for jewelry that can be worn every day, combined with other pieces and styled in different ways. According to her, young customers want an item to reflect their individuality, be part of their everyday wardrobe and at the same time retain the value of a piece of jewelry.

Shamlal Ahamed, managing director of international operations at Malabar Gold & Diamonds, also called the shift toward lighter pieces the most noticeable change in the preferences of young consumers. They are increasingly opting for minimalist models suitable for everyday wear.

Demand for 18-karat gold

Interest in 18-karat gold jewelry is growing among young people in the UAE. They are attracted by modern design and durability, while lighter pieces make it possible to buy jewelry at a lower price amid rising gold prices. John Paul Alukkas, chief executive of Joyalukkas Jewellery, noted that young customers are looking for jewelry that can be worn at work, informal gatherings and weddings.

Chirag Vora, managing director of Bafleh Jewellery, said that young first-time gold buyers are more cautious amid high prices and often start with small pieces. At the same time, customers buying jewelry for weddings or important family events are not giving up gold. It is also bought for engagements, religious and cultural celebrations, as well as to mark a first job and career achievements.
