Cross River State in Nigeria plans ranching development — Premium Times Nigeria
Cross River State in Nigeria plans to develop organized ranching, grazing lands and livestock production clusters to reduce conflicts between farmers and herders. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, citing Liyel Imokhuede, adviser on livestock development to State Governor Bassey Otu.
Transition to organized livestock farming
According to Imokhuede, the state administration intends to move away from the open and uncontrolled movement of livestock in favor of organized production. Authorities are identifying sites for ranches, demonstration farms, grazing-land development and livestock clusters.
The official said access to land would be planned in accordance with state legal provisions and with consideration for local communities. He stressed that modern ranching requires not only land for livestock, but also water, grazing land, veterinary services, animal health infrastructure, roads, security, feed and access to markets.

Control of animal movement
Imokhuede also drew attention to the state’s location along an international corridor for livestock movement, making control of such movement particularly important. He described the border animal holding and quarantine facility in Mfum-Adjasor in Etung as an important facility.
According to him, the facility is intended to help control animal movement, conduct disease surveillance, ensure traceability and make cross-border trade safer. The state authorities’ approach, the governor’s adviser said, provides for protecting farmers and creating a viable and organized economic system for herders.
