Ukraine's Foreign Ministry on the meeting between former Russian and German officials in Baku: its significance is close to zero
Georgiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on the meeting in Baku between former high-ranking officials from Germany and Russia—the aggressor state.
Tykhyi called this meeting “as secret as it is insignificant.” He emphasized that the Ukrainian side had not authorized any of the participants to do anything.
“Some people, whose names are practically impossible to find on Google anymore, are meeting and talking about something. The Ukrainian side has not authorized any of them to do anything. The significance of such meetings for the actual peace process is close to zero,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated.
The day before, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that his country’s territory had been used to host the meeting without the Azerbaijani side’s knowledge.
The unofficial German delegation included Ronald Pofalla, former chief of staff to Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Matthias Platzeck, former governor of Brandenburg. The Russian side was represented by Valery Fadeev, chairman of the Council on Civil Society and Human Rights, and former Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, who currently heads the board of the state-owned energy conglomerate Gazprom.
