FX dealing candidates in Cyprus advised to demonstrate practical knowledge

In Cyprus, candidates for FX dealer positions may fail an interview even with many years of experience at brokerage companies if they are unable to apply their knowledge in practical situations. This is reported by Cyprus Mail, citing Marios K. Kyriakou, head of the Cyprus FX Dealer Academy.

Knowing terminology is not enough

According to Kyriakou, the main problem often lies not in a lack of experience, but in a candidate’s inability to connect acquired knowledge with how a dealing desk operates. Applicants may have experience at well-known brokers, several years of practice on a dealing desk and relevant qualifications, yet struggle when interview questions go beyond basic terminology.

The academy named profit-and-loss calculations, corporate actions, brokers’ revenue from contracts for difference (CFDs), market structure and toxic order flow among problematic topics. Such gaps become more noticeable when a candidate is asked to analyze a hypothetical market situation rather than simply explain the meaning of a term.

The logic behind decisions is assessed

For example, during an interview, a candidate may be asked what they would check first after an unexpected market move, what risks they would identify and how they would change their actions if one of the conditions changed. In Kyriakou’s view, strong candidates can consistently explain the logic of their steps, even if their first answer is not entirely correct.

Kyriakou has about ten years of experience working on dealing desks at mid-sized retail brokers. He progressed from junior positions to senior and management roles, and later trained new dealers, managed dealing desks and assessed applicants for senior positions.

From execution to responsibility

Employees of operations departments, customer support, administrative and technical teams can also demonstrate relevant experience if they explain how their work is connected to trade flow, client behavior and risks. Candidates for entry-level positions are not expected to have experience making decisions involving real market risk, but they should understand the basic mechanics of dealing and the business logic of the role.

For current dealers, career growth also depends not only on length of service. Kyriakou noted that advancement is increasingly linked to readiness to take responsibility for professional judgments, trading limits, hedging, communication and the broader work of the dealing desk.
