The largest buyer of Russian T-90 tanks may switch to Chinese tanks
Algeria, one of the key buyers of Russian T-90 tanks, has shown interest in Chinese combat vehicles, which may indicate that Russia is losing ground in the arms market.
This refers to an updated export version of the Chinese VT-4 tank, which has been equipped with an active protection system.
According to experts, this vehicle is intended specifically for Algeria, which is one of the largest operators of the T-90. During tests in 2024, the VT-4 outperformed the Russian T-90S.
The Chinese tank also received a number of design updates: reinforced dynamic protection, a new gun mantlet shape, modernized optics, and a revised layout of components.
A key advantage is the active protection system, which enhances the vehicle’s survivability. Meanwhile, similar systems have not yet entered serial production for the Russian T-90M.
Analysts note that Algeria’s potential interest in Chinese equipment may stem from the questionable effectiveness of Russian armored vehicles in the war against Ukraine.
As a reminder, the Kremlin stated that despite a pause in negotiations, it continues to maintain contacts with the U.S.
Additionally, Putin’s approval rating has plummeted due to increased censorship in Russia.
