Tensions Between the UAE and Saudi Arabia Over Southern Yemen’s Future

Tensions between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have intensified due to growing disagreements over the political future of southern Yemen. The rising influence of the Southern Transitional Council, backed by the UAE, has raised concerns in Riyadh about security risks and the potential fragmentation of the country.

The council’s recent eastward expansion and control over economically significant areas marked a turning point. Saudi Arabia responded with stronger diplomatic pressure and warnings that any actions threatening security would not be tolerated.

The UAE, however, continues to support its allies and frames this stance as loyalty and long-term commitment. Analysts note that the dispute reflects deeper strategic differences over Yemen’s political structure, while divisions among former partners may benefit the Houthi movement.

The outlook remains uncertain. Further escalation in southern Yemen could reshape the regional balance of power and increase instability across the wider region.
