NASA has concluded the mission of the MAVEN Mars probe, which operated in orbit for over 11 years

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has officially announced the end of operations for its MAVEN research probe in Martian orbit.

The spacecraft operated successfully for over 11 years, significantly exceeding its initial operational lifespan.

The scientific mission was aimed at a detailed study of the Red Planet’s atmosphere and the factors contributing to its gradual loss.

“NASA’s first mission dedicated to observing the Martian atmosphere and its evolution, MAVEN, has concluded after more than 11 years in Mars orbit and ten years beyond its primary one-year mission,” the agency stated in a release.

Technical problems with the spacecraft began late last year. Direct communication with the interplanetary probe was completely lost on December 6, 2025, when the spacecraft disappeared behind the planet’s disk as planned.

Up to that point, all life support systems and onboard computers had been operating normally, with no critical anomalies recorded.

After prolonged unsuccessful attempts to reestablish stable contact with the spacecraft, specialists convened a special team of experts.

The analysts’ main task was to identify the causes of the failure and assess the feasibility of further rescue operations in deep space.

“In February, the Agency convened an emergency review board to assess recovery efforts and the spacecraft’s likely current status. The commission determined that the MAVEN spacecraft is beyond repair and is no longer capable of carrying out its scientific mission or data relay mission,” NASA added.

This is stated in a NASA press release.

As a reminder, NASA is testing the new X-59 flying machine, which promises silent supersonic flight.

NASA is also threatening to remove SpaceX from the Artemis lunar mission.
