Netanyahu says Israel warned Britain of alleged Iranian attack — Channel NewsAsia

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel had provided the United Kingdom with intelligence about an alleged attack planned by Iran on RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. He said this in an interview with Fox News, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Netanyahu's statement

According to the Israeli prime minister, the warning was delivered shortly before the British government announced sanctions on September 8 against goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu linked these events and criticized London's pressure on his government over its treatment of Palestinians.

Netanyahu said it concerned an attack that, he claimed, was sponsored by Iran. He called the British government's response to the situation absurd.

Response of the British authorities

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on September 30 that there were compelling indications of Iran's involvement in suspicious activity near RAF Fairford. According to the report, the base is used by US forces in the war against Iran.

US President Donald Trump had also previously spoken about Iran's possible role in the incident. A local resident reported seeing masked men near vans heading toward the airbase. Police declared a major incident at the base and detained several men on suspicion of offenses under explosives legislation, later releasing them on bail.
