The Thomson Foundation announced the finalists after assessing 651 entries submitted by 217 journalists from 56 countries. The list also includes Si Er Yap from Malaysia, Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu and Aaron Atsael from Nigeria, Heorhii Shabaiev from Ukraine, Rafly Pratama from Indonesia, Humberto Basilio from Mexico, Afra Borgi from Yemen, Doha Amrani from Algeria, Patricia Ngewoa from Sierra Leone, Alain Kanyombo from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and William Kamau from Kenya.
The foundation said the finalists' work focuses on corruption, abuse of power, conflicts, human trafficking, exploitation, and the stories of people who often receive little media attention. Thomson Foundation training manager Catherine Mackie noted that many participants work in difficult conditions, while some investigations lasted weeks or months and had a tangible impact.

Investigation into businessman's disappearance
Ede was shortlisted for an investigation into the disappearance of a Nigerian businessman. According to PREMIUM TIMES, his disappearance was preceded by an alleged abduction by police officers in Lagos and his transfer to Anambra State. The outlet's report described the missing man's widow's years-long struggle for justice, which remains out of reach, and also examined the broader consequences of police violence in Nigeria.
The Young Journalist of the Year Award is organized annually by the Thomson Foundation in partnership with the UK's Foreign Press Association. The competition is open to journalists under the age of 30 from countries where gross national income per capita does not exceed $20,000. The name of the 2026 winner is expected to be announced at the annual FPA Awards ceremony in London in November.
