A third deportation flight departed from Germany overnight, transporting approximately 25 Afghan nationals to Afghanistan. All of them had previously been convicted of crimes committed in Germany.
Spiegel reported this, citing its own sources.
On the night of April 28, a charter flight departed from Leipzig Airport, transporting approximately 25 Afghan nationals to Afghanistan. These individuals had been convicted in Germany of various crimes—ranging from theft and drug trafficking to serious offenses such as kidnapping, murder, and rape.
The plane stopped in Trabzon, Turkey, and arrived in Kabul in the morning; the accompanying German law enforcement officers will return home on the same flight.
According to journalists, all those deported are exclusively convicted criminals who were brought onto the flight directly from prisons in various German states.
As a reminder, after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, Germany sent its first deportation flight to that country in 2024, during the government of Olaf Scholz—prior to that, deportations had been suspended on the grounds that Afghanistan did not meet human rights standards. At that time, the deportation took place through the mediation of Qatar, as Berlin did not want to have direct contact with the Taliban.
The situation changed after the arrival of Friedrich Merz’s government—the new Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, began direct negotiations with Kabul to increase the frequency of deportation flights. The first deportation under a direct agreement with the Taliban took place in February 2026.
The Taliban hopes that such cooperation will lead to the normalization of relations with Germany. For Dobrindt, the priority is to quickly deport as many convicted Afghans as possible from the country.
